Report by international committee on establishment of IST Austria submitted 10 years ago – “On the Way to the Top” brings top-class panelists to Austria – Live recording of event available on Internet

“On the way to the top – what makes a research institute excellent” was held on June 6, 2016, at IST Austria. The public event celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the so called “Harari-Kübler-Markl-Report”.

On June 6, 2006, Haim Harari, Olaf Kübler, and Hubert Markl submitted their report for the establishment of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria to Veit Sorger, President of the Federation of Austrian Industries at the time. Even ten years later, this report describes the founding principles that continue to shape IST Austria’s development to this day. IST Austria has two essential objectives: conducting world-class basic research driven by scientific curiosity and training the next generation of excellent researchers in the natural and formal sciences at an internationally recognized graduate school.

In order to celebrate the 10-year anniversary an international panel discussion was organized on June 6, 2016, on the IST Austria campus in Klosterneuburg. Invited by IST Austria President Tom Henzinger, successful managers of leading scientific institutions were brought together to share their expertise and reflect on what it takes to achieve scientific excellence and become a first-class research center.

In the tightly packed Raiffeisen Lecture Hall, IST Austria President Thomas Henzinger and such international top-class panelists as

  • Patrick Aebischer, President of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)
  • Jonathan Dorfan, President of Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST)
  • Peter Gruss, President of Max Planck Society (2002-2014)
  • Haim Harari, Chair of Executive Committee of IST Austria Board of Trustees, President of Weizmann Institute of Science (1988-2001)
  • Rolf-Dieter Heuer, Director General of CERN (2009-2015)
  • Olaf Kübler, Executive Committee of IST Austria Board of Trustees, President of ETH Zurich (1997-2005)
  • Helga Nowotny, President of European Research Council (ERC) (2010-2013)

were discussing the question of what it takes to create research institutions that comply with international standards of excellence.

The many-faceted statements and opinions of this top-class panel can and shall speak for themselves. The live recording can be viewed in a shortened and a full-length version on the Internet.
