Research interests


Gastrulation is a fundamental process of animal development. The function of gastrulation for establishing germ layers is highly conserved but its modes are astonishingly diversified in the course of animal evolution. This phenomenon has fascinated scientists' interests for centuries, raising questions like these ; How and why are the gastrulation modes changed? What is conserved and what is different among this process? What are homologous and/or analogous structures between them?

I address these questions by comparing the development of three different species exhibiting distinct modes of gastrulation (zebrafish, ascidian and chick) especially focusing on the physical properties of the cells in the process. Through this research, I want to understand the quintessence of the development, that is, developmental constraints and its evolvability.
