Álvaro Inglés Prieto receives Spanish Biophysical Society Prize

IST Austria postdoc awarded for excellent research in biophysics

Álvaro Inglés Prieto was awarded this year’s AntalGenics – SBE-33 Prize. The executive council of the Spanish Biophysical Society (Sociedad de Biofísica de España, SBE) has selected him based on “his excellent work on the application of diverse biophysical methods to investigate the stability, structure and function of ancestral proteins.” The annual AntalGenics – SBE-33 Prize recognizes the work of outstanding biophysicists under the age of 33, regardless of the country in which they conduct their research. Sponsored by the Spanish biotechnological company AntalGenics, the award includes a EUR 1000 prize and has been granted since 2012. This year’s awardees will deliver a talk during a special session of the 16th SBE Congress, held on June 6-8, 2017, in Seville.

Álvaro Inglés Prieto received his M.Sc. degree from the University of Seville (Spain) in 2009, and obtained his Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Granada (Spain) in 2012. His work under the supervision of Professor José M. Sánchez Ruiz focused on how the biophysical properties of proteins change during evolution and can be used for re-engineering proteins. In 2013, he moved to the laboratory of Assistant Professor Harald Janovjak at IST Austria, where he conducts research as a postdoctoral fellow in the field of synthetic biology. In particular, he has developed  a general strategy to control receptor tyrosine kinases with light.

The Spanish Biophysical Society was established in 1986 to promote collaboration and networking between biophysicists working in Spain and abroad. In order to support these international relationships, the SBE maintains active memberships in the European Biophysical Societies Association and the Latinoamerican Federation of Biophysical Societies. Another objective of the SBE is the communication and dissemination of science, especially biophysics, to the public.
