Prof. Hubert Markl passed away on January 8, 2015, in Konstanz (Germany) after a long illness. Markl was 76 years old.

From 1996 to 2002 Markl served as President of the Max Planck Society after holding positions as President of the Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft (DFG) and as President of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. In 2006, this extensive experience as a leading science manager of his generation predisposed the renowned zoologist to become a member of the International Committee, together with Prof. Haim Harari and Prof. Olaf Kübler, who wrote the blueprint for the establishment and development of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria). The Committee’s report, which was published on June 6, 2006, defined the principles, structure, and goals of the Institute.

President Thomas Henzinger expressed his deep sorrow: “The farsighted nature of this report can be seen from the fact that it reads today as a description of the Institute. IST Austria owes Hubert Markl a debt of gratitude for his wise contributions and the visionary conviction with which he supported the formation of IST Austria.”

Haim Harari, Chair of the Executive Committee of IST Austria, in his statement noted: “Hubert Markl will be remembered for his wisdom, friendship and wonderful consent to assist in any new scientific or other human endeavor to which he could contribute significantly.”
