Research

I am interested in the role of trade-offs in/between traits in evolution, particularly in maintenance of polymorphisms and as limits to adaptation. As a model system I am using an adaptive immune system of prokaryotes known as the CRISR system. Such a system is anticipated to impose some costs on its bearers when there are no pathogens around, while it is clearly beneficial when it comes to defense against them. I am aiming to elucidate the cost, reconstruct the actual shape this trade-off and investigate in vivo and in silico how does it affect dynamics of Escherichia coli populations in terms of coexistence of susceptible and immune individuals in space and time both in absence and presence of a bacteriophage
