2nd IST Austria Summer School in Analysis and PDEs

This week, 90 young mathematicians from 13 countries in Europe, North America, and East Asia have gathered at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria to participate in the “2nd IST Austria Summer School in Analysis and PDEs” and learn about some of the newest developments in their field.

Partial differential equations (PDEs) are a fundamental tool for the description of many phenomena in the sciences, in particular in physics. Within mathematics, they play an indispensable role in differential geometry and probability. The analysis of partial differential equations is an important and highly active research area in modern mathematics.

In the summer school, three internationally leading mathematicians have given introductory courses to some of the newest scientific approaches in the analysis of PDEs, complemented by invited talks. In addition, several participating PhD students had the opportunity to present their research in short talks.

The keynote lecturers of this year’s Summer School are:

– Felix Otto (MPI for Mathematics in the Sciences) is one of the world’s leading researchers in PDEs and applied analysis. Prof. Otto has received numerous prestigious prizes and awards for his work, notably the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the DFG in 2006 and memberships in the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Academia Europaea. He was invited speaker of the International Congress of Mathematicians 2002 and plenary speaker of the European Congress in Mathematics 2008. In his career, he held professorships at the University of California at Santa Barbara from 1998-1999 and at the University of Bonn from 1999-2010. Since 2010, he has been director at the MPI for Mathematics in the Sciences.

– Wilhelm Schlag (Yale University) is a world-leading mathematician in the fields of dispersive partial differential equations and harmonic analysis. Prior to his current position as professor at Yale University, he was a professor at Caltech from 2001 to 2005 and at the University of Chicago from 2005 to 2018.   He was plenary speaker at the International Congress in Mathematical Physics 2012 and invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014.

– László Székelyhidi (University of Leipzig) is a world-leading researcher in the fields of mathematical fluid mechanics and applied analysis. Among many other awards, his research has been recognized with the Oberwolfach Prize in 2011, the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2019, and a membership in the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014. Prior to being appointed director at the MPI for Mathematics in the Sciences in 2022, he has held professorships at the University of Bonn from 2007-2011 and at the University of Leipzig since 2011.

The invited talks were given by Prof. Peter Bella (Univ. Dortmund), Prof. Jonas Lührmann (Texas A&M University, Austin), and Prof. Stefano Modena (Univ. Darmstadt).
