Highly qualified candidates who have recently completed their PhD or equivalent in the natural or computer sciences, mathematics or any related discipline are eligible to apply for a full-time postdoctoral position at IST Austria.

Postdocs at IST Austria develop the skills necessary for their next career steps elsewhere (career development trainings and workshops). Postdocs interact closely with colleagues from different fields through joint projects and events, and have access to state-of-the art facilities from bioimaging to nanofabrication and scientific computing.

How to apply

The NOMIS Fellowship Program at IST Austria offers excellent postdoctoral researchers the freedom to work on questions at the intersection of two or more scientific disciplines in a unique scientific environment, while also providing the security of outstanding scientific mentorship from proven leaders in their respective fields. A cross-discipline project proposal, to be co-supervised by two group leaders from different disciplines, identifies projects and fellows who demonstrate great flexibility, creativity and collaboration.

All research fields supported at IST Austria will be eligible (see Should the specific interdisciplinary expertise required for the proposed research not be available at IST, an external secondary supervisor can be proposed. This external supervisor can provide the fellow with a secondment of up to three months per fellowship year.

NOMIS and IST Austria shall award two NOMIS fellowships annually, following a two-stage application process (including interview).

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must have been awarded their PhD and have between two and four years of postdoctoral experience at the time of recruitment.
  • Applicants must have an existing affiliation to an academic/research institution (note: researchers already employed at IST Austria are not eligible to apply).
  • Following the initial evaluation round, top-ranked candidates must be available for a remote interview between Oct. 5, 2020, and Oct. 9, 2020.
  • If successful, the NOMIS Fellowship must commence within six months of notification.

Have you received excellent academic training and are eager to perform cutting-edge research in an international environment? Do you want to push the frontiers of science and work with supervisors and colleagues that are among the best in the world?

The IST Austria Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, ISTfellow, offers fully funded (two-year; min. salary approx. 53,500 EUR (gross) annually) postdoctoral fellowships for highly qualified candidates who have recently completed (or will soon complete) their PhD or equivalent in the natural or computer sciences, mathematics or any related discipline.

ISTfellows will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and are encouraged to interact closely with colleagues from different fields as part of their fellowship project. Small research groups (15 people or less) guarantee close mentorship by your host professor(s). ISTfellows additionally benefit from a rich career development program covering both academic and non-academic skills relevant for your subsequent career move.
