The governance and management structures of IST Austria guarantee its independence and freedom from political and commercial influences. The Institute is headed by the President, who is appointed by the Board of Trustees and advised by the Scientific Board. The first President of IST Austria is Thomas A. Henzinger, a leading computer scientist and former professor of the University of California at Berkeley and the EPFL Lausanne in Switzerland.
IST Austria is governed by a number of boards, each of them responsible for precisely defined tasks. The members of the boards are selected according to the basic principle of independence from any influence other than scientific or administrative excellence.
The mission of the administration at IST Austria is to provide the best possible environment for outstanding science. Dedicated experts offer their assistance on a wide range of matters and are glad to help at any time. Most of them are located in the voestalpine Building and the Administration Building.
