The Coulomb gas is a model of statistical physics appearing in a wide variety of contexts, from approximation theory to condensed matter physics. This talk will address several recent results, including optimal Wegner estimates, the size of the minimal inter-particle distance, and incompressibility on large microscopic scales, which all share one unifying and intuitive idea. We will also discuss an application to the fractional quantum Hall effect.
