Under the title “Roots and Trajectories” the artists Daniela Brill Estrada (Colombia) and Shailesh BR (India) will be exhibiting at f6 – Open Factory in Vienna from July 14 to 21. As Artists in Residence at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) in Klosterneuburg, the two have exchanged ideas with various researchers over the past months and gained comprehensive insights into laboratories and research projects. They have translated excerpts of these exchanges into installations, research-diary-like collages and pieces. The exhibition will open with a vernissage on Thursday, July 13, 6pm to 10pm.
“Science at its base is a creative practice”, says curator Mia Meus of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA). The PhD-granting research institution is specialized in basic research in natural sciences, mathematics and computer sciences. However, it often takes years until basic research becomes accessible to the public in their everyday life. ISTA is therefore opening up to new ways of interdisciplinary collaboration: convergences between art, science, design and technology are to create new approaches and provide points of access. “It is thus with great pleasure that we invite you to the exhibition Roots & Trajectories on the occasion of the first successful season of our Artist Residency”, says Meus.
The artists
Complexities, structures of knowledge and aesthetics as sensory tools of understanding: Daniela Brill Estrada tackles complex topics with beautifully minimalist abstractions and narrates wonderful bridges between the different research topics she has engaged with at the Institute. From origin of life to stellar dynamics and soft matter physics, Daniela's works are looking at the boundaries of materiality and information and at which points we consider matter to display life-like behavior, or not.
Raised in a small village in India and formerly trained as a monk, Shailesh BR comes at science and technology from an unexpected angle: His playful machines blend the spaces between philosophy, poetry, function and reflection. During his stay at ISTA he specifically focused on plant research and imaging technologies and has translated his fascination into sculptures that reference experiment-setups, Indian film making and playful metaphors.
