Obituary: Peer Bork
ISTA mourns the loss of a distinguished member of its Scientific Board
The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) mourns the passing of Peer Bork, a member of the ISTA Scientific Board, who died on 16 January 2026. Peer Bork was an internationally renowned computational biologist and a leading figure in European life sciences, most recently serving as Interim Director General of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).

Peer Bork made outstanding contributions to computational biology, microbiomics, and systems biology, and was among the most highly cited researchers worldwide. Alongside his scientific achievements, he was widely respected for his strategic insight and commitment to strengthening research institutions and international collaboration. As a member of the ISTA Scientific Board, he contributed his expertise and perspective to the Institute’s scientific development and long-term strategy. Peer Bork’s term as a member of the Scientific Board began in January 2024, and he made it a priority to attend meetings of the Board in person, actively participating in discussions and engaging with faculty.
“Peer Bork was an exceptional scientist and an engaged member of ISTA’s Scientific Board,” says Martin Hetzer, President of ISTA. “He combined extraordinary scientific depth with a clear strategic vision for research institutions. His advice was always thoughtful, forward-looking, and grounded in a profound understanding of how excellent science thrives. His sudden passing leaves a void in our community, both scientifically and personally. We are deeply saddened by this loss and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”
Peer Bork joined EMBL in 1991 and went on to shape its scientific profile over several decades, including as Director of EMBL Heidelberg and Head of the Structural and Computational Biology Unit. He authored more than 700 scientific publications, co-founded several successful biotechnology companies, and received numerous international honors for his scientific and mentoring achievements.
