US National Academy of Science Elects Nick Barton

The National Academy of Sciences recently elected new members, both US and international, in recognition of their achievements in basic research. Among them is Nicholas Barton, professor at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) and renowned expert in the field of evolutionary population genetics.

The National Academy of Sciences (United States of America) recently announced the election of new members, including 24 international members, “in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.”

Nick Barton, having joined ISTA in 2008, is the first professor of the Institute. His research group on Evolutionary Genetics develops mathematical models to probe fundamental issues in evolution. This way they tackle questions on how new species form, what limits adaptation, and what shapes the genetic system.

In 2013, the Austrian Academy of Sciences awarded Barton the Erwin Schrödinger-Prize as „worldwide leading scientist in the field of population genetics.” Other awards and honors include an ERC Grant of the European Research Council, the Mendel Medal of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Darwin Medal and the Darwin-Wallace Medal.
