Chemical Crystallographer for Core Materials Characterization Service

Your Responsibilities

The Lab Support Facility at ISTA provides scientists with centralized access to powder XRD, SAXS and other measurement methods. For the next step of expansion, we plan to include a single crystal XRD service into our core materials characterization services. We are looking for an experienced single crystal X-ray crystallographer to build up the new SC-XRD service and help oversee the existing X-ray operations.

  • Complete single crystal analysis workflow (crystal harvesting – data collection – data analysis)
  • Focus on complex molecular crystal systems, including absolute configuration determination, modular, twinned and disordered structures
  • Provide central service by working closely with research groups to plan experiments, communicate results and provide analytical support
  • Provide training and technical support to users (growth and selection of crystals, handling of equipment, structure determination)
  • Operate and maintain facility equipment (SC-XRD, and powder XRD, SAXS)
  • Reliably document all procedures along QC standards
  • Conceptualize and implement working processes, rules and guidelines

Your Profile

  • Advanced degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in chemical crystallography or similar field
  • Track record of solving crystal structures of small and/or macro-molecules to publication standard
  • Experience in harvesting and mounting single crystals and collecting data in non-ambient conditions
  • In-depth knowledge in data collection, solving (using CrysAlisPro or similar) and refining (using ShelX, Olex2, PLATON) complex molecular structures
  • Excellent communications skills in English (written & spoken)
  • Service oriented working style with high conceptual and organizational skills
  • Excellent team player who can also work independently
