Computational Specialist with a focus cryoEM/ET analysis - Michael group

  • Full Time (40 h/w)
  • Klosterneuburg near Vienna, Austria
  • € 50,000* gross/year; position initially limited for two years (extension and transition to a permanent contract tbd)

Your Responsibilities

The Michael group uses cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), including single-particle and tomography approaches, to elucidate the ultrastructure of chromatin and its regulatory complexes within cells. We combine cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM and cryo-ET) with a host of other biophysical, biochemical, in-silico, and in-vivo methods. We are seeking a talented and dedicated specialist to become the "computational heart" of our new group. Your primary focus will be developing computational analysis workflows for cryo-EM/electron tomography data, providing crucial support for our biologically focused team members, and advancing our computational capabilities. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage with ISTA's rich computational community and leverage cutting-edge computational approaches, including deep learning and artificial intelligence:

  • Develop and optimize computational workflows for analyzing cryo-EM and cryo-ET data
  • Assisting team members with their analyses while also leading independent projects
  • Interface with ISTA’s SSUs (electron microscopy, scientific computing) to build and manage computational pipelines and software for the group
  • Collaborate with ISTA's computational science and data science teams to utilize deep learning and AI to enhance data analysis techniques
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary projects within the lab

Your Profile

  • Ph.D. degree and/or postdoctoral experience in structural biology, computer science, or a related discipline
  • Experience in working in a high-level research environment
  • Substantial experience in (cryo-)EM image analysis, with a preference for cryo-ET exposure
  • Expertise in subtomogram averaging (STA) and single particle analysis (SPA) software
  • Strong expertise with working in UNIX/Linux and high-performance computing environments
  • Experience in Shell scripting and proficiency in computational languages, such as Python, or C++
  • Ability to learn and integrate new concepts, tools, and techniques
  • Proficiency in English with exceptional communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong multi-project management skills and a team-player attitude
  • Experience in multidisciplinary projects is a plus
  • Strong organizational skills, reliability and a sense for responsibility
  • Proactive personality with a solution-oriented approach
