Manager for the Scientific Computing Unit

Your Responsibilities

The Scientific Computing Unit at ISTA supports researchers with high-performance computing, software development, and bioinformatics services. The unit currently has seven dedicated staff members and is equipped with state-of-the-art computing resources, including a high-performance computing (HPC) cluster, various GPU and CPU nodes, and extensive cluster storage capabilities. We foster a supportive and inclusive work culture that encourages continuous learning and professional growth.At ISTA's Scientific Computing facility, you'll play a pivotal role in overseeing and advancing our cutting-edge High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster, one of the largest in Austria. Your expertise and grasp of research methodologies will be essential for providing exceptional support to our scientists.

  • Provide leadership and management for the Scientific Computing Facility.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for the growth and enhancement of the facilities’s capabilities and services.
  • Work closely with research groups to understand their needs, provide consultation, and develop custom solutions tailored to their research questions.
  • Stay abreast of emerging HPC/IT trends and technologies to enhance your knowledge and expertise.
  • Coordinate and manage HPC related hardware & software procurement, license tracking, and compliance with relevant policies and regulations for the HPC cluster(s).
  • Oversee the offering and optimization of services such as development of HPC applications, software support, custom hardware configurations, and bioinformatics analysis.
  • Develop and maintain documentation, knowledge base articles, standard operating procedures, and polices for the HPC infrastructures.
  • Provide and develop trainings to ensure efficient use of our HPC infrastructures.
  • Maintain open and effective communication channels with external partners such as Austrian and international research institutions and HPC communities.

Your Profile

  • Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related (i.e. Climate/Physics/Astro science) field.
  • Very solid background in parallel computing, ideally for CPU and GPU.
  • Proven experience in leading and managing high-performance computing or scientific computing units, preferably in a similar role at an international research institution. Several years of professional experience as a HPC Systems Administrator or a similar role.
  • Strong technical background and in-depth knowledge of parallel/cluster file systems like BeeGFS NFS, and ZFS, familiarity with InfiniBand networking and its implementations in a HPC environment.
  • Hands-on experience with SLURM or other HPC job schedulers.
  • Solid understanding of Linux operating systems, system administration, and shell scripting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and techniques, particularly in genomics and transcriptomics, is desirable
  • Stress resistance and strong interpersonal skills
