IST Commemoration Lecture: Herwig Czech

Nazi Medical Crimes at the Psychiatric Hospital Gugging: Historical Context, Facts, and Legacy

On November 25, the historian Herwig Czech will give the first IST Commemoration Lecture titled “Nazi Medical Crimes at the Psychiatric Hospital Gugging: Historical Context, Facts, and Legacy.” It is the intention of this new series of lectures in English to introduce the members of the Institute and the public to the past of the IST Austria campus and, in a broader sense, to aspects of the history of science requiring remembrance and reflection. This first IST Commemoration Lecture will be presented by the Chair of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, Haim Harari.

Herwig Czech is a Permanent Research Fellow at the Documentation Center of the Austrian Resistance and the recipient of an APART Fellowship of the Austrian Academy of Sciences for the project “Health, Illness and Death. Vienna 1944-1948.” In 2007 the Executive Committee commissioned Herwig Czech to undertake a study on the Nazi medical crimes in the psychiatric hospital in Gugging. The paper was forwarded to the artists participating in the competition for a campus memorial  as a reference for their deliberations. In the spring of 2008 an international jury chose the project designed by Dorothee Golz. Find out more on the memorial at www.memorialgugging.at
