We are searching for a Postdoc with expertise in developing computational analysis workflows of cryo-electron microscopy/electron tomography data to become the “computational heart” of our new group at ISTA.
Our Chromatin Structure and Rhythms Lab uses cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), including single-particle and tomography approaches, to elucidate the ultrastructure of chromatin and its regulatory complexes within cells. We aim to decipher how the spatial organization of genes and macromolecular assemblies within the nucleus contributes to precise and environmentally sensitive gene control. We are particularly interested in investigating how transcription factors and their cofactors interact with chromatin to control gene activity. We employ diverse techniques such as biochemistry, chemical biology, and genomics to uncover how the interplay between transcription factors and the histone code – the chemical tags on chromatin – influences gene regulation. By utilizing the circadian system as a model in diverse organisms, including human cells and green algae, we seek to unravel fundamental principles of gene regulation across multiple biological scales and gain insights into how cells keep time.

Your Responsibilities
We are looking for someone with a background in computation and image analysis who is comfortable with Linux, Matlab, Python, etc. Experience with cryo-EM structure determination (single particle or subtomogram averaging) is a plus. This Postdoc will take a leading role as the group’s computational expert. In addition to their own independent projects, they will help our more biologically focused group members push their analysis forward. This Postdoc will also help build our computational pipelines and manage our software.
As cryo-EM/ET data grows in scale and complexity, more than traditional analysis methods will be required. The role would benefit from proficiency in cutting-edge computational approaches, including deep learning and artificial intelligence, which can revolutionize how cryo-EM and cryo-ET data are deciphered. ISTA boasts a wide range of computational expertise on the campus (computer and data science) with access to its own High-Performance Computing Cluster, operated by the Scientific Computing team. Therefore, joining our group provides the unique opportunity to synergize with this rich computational community to develop deep learning tools for analyzing cellular tomograms, aiming to make “visual proteomics” a reality.
Your Profile
- A Ph.D. degree and/or postdoctoral experience in structural biology, computer science, or a related discipline.
- Experience in working in a high-level research environment is preferred.
- Substantial experience in (cryo-)EM image analysis, with a preference for those with previous cryo-ET exposure.
- Expertise in subtomogram averaging (STA) and single particle analysis (SPA) software.
- Strong expertise with working in UNIX/Linux and high-performance computing environments.
- Experience in Shell scripting and proficiency in computational languages, such as Python, C++ or similar
- A proclivity for learning and assimilating new concepts, tools, and techniques.
- Proficient in English, the working language at ISTA, and exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
- Multi-project management acumen and a proven team player attitude is crucial for this position.
- Experience in working on multidisciplinary projects is a plus
