Thomas A. Henzinger reappointed as President of IST Austria

In its meeting on Monday, November 28, the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria), re-appointed Prof. Thomas A. Henzinger for a third four-year term as President of the Institute. His new term of office will start on September 1, 2017.

Professor Henzinger, accepting to lead the Institute for another term, said: “The reappointment by the Board of Trustees is a great honor for me. The last years were a tremendous experience. I am very grateful for the confidence vested in me by the board members, and by the scientists who decided to join IST Austria. I also wish to take this opportunity to thank the entire staff of the Institute, whose commitment and dedication has made the rapid development of IST Austria possible. But our goal is lofty and much work remains to be done. In the coming years I will continue to do my best to lead IST Austria in its mission to become a globally renowned center for basic research in science.”

Dr. Claus J. Raidl, Chair of the Board of Trustees of IST Austria, said: “We are delighted that Prof. Thomas Henzinger accepted the offer to serve a third term as President of IST Austria. Our decision is based on his achievements in the past years and his vision for the future. In his first two terms Henzinger proved to be a determined and successful leader, building and developing the Institute in a rigorous fashion into an international center for frontier research. I would like to stress his ability to coordinate the interests and efforts of all stakeholders and participants to create an atmosphere of excellence, for which IST Austria has come to stand. With Thomas Henzinger we are confident that IST Austria will remain on its trajectory to become a graduate institution that plays in the top international league.”

Prof. Haim Harari, Chair of the Executive Committee of IST Austria, summarized the achievements of President Henzinger during his first two terms in office: “It has been a great privilege to have Tom Henzinger as the first President of IST Austria and to observe his outstanding performance in recruiting an extraordinary international team of scientists. Henzinger can be proud of his achievements as a scientist, winning the Wittgenstein award, and as a science manager and an institute builder. Based on his leadership record, he is certainly the right person to tackle the challenge of advancing the Institute towards an even higher level of international recognition.”
